🌱 Morphology
Variegated form of the old Japanese hybrid Echeveria ‘Mebina’, of undocumented parentage. It produces small, compact rosettes of fleshy, oval, slightly pointed leaves, which multiply easily by offsets to form dense colonies. The variegation creates broad cream, ivory, or pale yellow areas on the glaucous green of the leaf, while the margins and tips can take on intense pink, coral, or reddish tones. In cold weather and bright light, the contrast increases noticeably.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a horticultural hybrid of Japanese origin, not a botanical species, so it has no natural distribution. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family. The variegated form is also marketed as Echeveria ‘Mebina’ Variegata or Echeveria ‘Mebina’ f. variegata.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9a. Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6.7 ºC in dry conditions and with protection from moisture, although the variegation can make the tissue more sensitive to cold damage and intense sun.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade, with an approximate PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and develop pink tones, but the variegated areas contain less chlorophyll and can suffer burns under very intense sun, especially during the middle hours of summer.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It shows a growth pattern mainly during spring and autumn, while the very high temperatures of summer can slow it down considerably. It is recommended to water abundantly only when the substrate is completely dry and to greatly reduce watering during periods of intense heat. Ventilation is essential to prevent moisture from remaining around the leaves and the neck of the rosettes.
🌸 Flowering
It can produce tall inflorescences with small flowers in orange, coral, or reddish tones during spring and summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
