€7,95
🌱 Morphology
One of the most spectacular forms of the large Echeveria gibbiflora, recognizable by its enormous fleshy, glabrous, waxy-surfaced leaves arranged in an open rosette that can exceed 30 cm in diameter. The obovate-spatulate leaves with wavy edges display an extraordinary range of grayish greens, bronzes, pinks, purples, and metallic tones that intensify with light. With age, it develops a robust stem that elevates the rosette and can reach a significant size.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Series Gibbiflorae. This is a historical form of a species native to Mexico, particularly from the central and southern parts of the country. It grows on stony slopes and volcanic outcrops, in xerophytic scrub and clearings of pine-oak forests, at an altitude of approximately 1,800 to 2,800 m. The name var. metallica is currently subordinated to Echeveria gibbiflora.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in very dry conditions and for short periods, although to keep its leaves intact, it is preferable to avoid frost.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with a recommended DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day. Intense light favors the metallic, bronze, and purple coloration, but during the most extreme days of a Madrid summer, light protection during the central hours of the day may be advisable.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It remains active as long as temperatures are moderate and light is sufficient, although its spectacular flowering usually occurs from late autumn to winter. It is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. During periods of intense cold, watering should be spaced out significantly.
🌸 Flowering
It produces impressive flower stalks that can reach 1 m, with branched inflorescences loaded with pink or reddish flowers, yellowish on the inside. In its natural range, flowering is concentrated mainly between November and January. The flowers remain open for about 7–8 days, with maximum opening around days 4–6. No reliable documentation has been found to establish the exact age of the first flowering or its self-fertility.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
