Echeveria 'Dionysos' | Red Wine Echeveria

🌱 Morphology
Horticultural hybrid created by Jean-Michel Moullec, resulting from a cross between Echeveria purpusorum × Echeveria sp. of unknown identity, and published in 2009. It forms compact, slow-growing rosettes that can reach approximately 10 cm in diameter and produce offsets when mature. Its leaves are thick, short, and very fleshy, triangular-ovate in shape with acute tips, though less narrow and pointed than those of Echeveria purpusorum. The olive-green, grayish-green, or slightly whitish background is speckled with small, irregular reddish-brown spots, while the edges take on reddish or wine-colored hues.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a horticultural hybrid, so it has no natural distribution. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family. One of its parent plants is Echeveria purpusorum, a Mexican species in the Urbiniae section, but the second parent of ‘Dionysos’ has not been identified. It is important not to confuse it with the genuine E. purpusorum, which is much rarer in cultivation: ‘Dionysos’ has leaves that are notably thicker, shorter, and fleshier.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −2 ºC, provided the substrate stays dry and exposure to cold is brief. Low temperatures combined with moisture considerably increase the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with an approximate PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Intense light encourages a compact rosette and enhances the reddish and wine-colored tones of the edges and spots. In very hot summers, it may benefit from light protection during the middle of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Water during the growing period, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Watering should be drastically reduced in winter, especially at low temperatures. Good ventilation is essential for a plant with such fleshy leaves.
🌸 Flowering
It usually blooms between May and July, producing 20–30 cm flower stalks with orange to reddish flowers and yellow tips. The inflorescence is branched, a characteristic that helps distinguish it from the genuine Echeveria purpusorum, whose flowers have a different structure.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing period, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Bloom. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
