🌱 Morphology
It has something of an urban landscape seen from above: a compact rosette of thick and elongated leaves, covered by a thin layer of farina that gives them grayish, bluish tones and, when conditions are suitable, pink nuances. The leaves overlap forming a very orderly architecture, but with an almost stony texture that perfectly explains the name of this cultivar.
It is a hybrid of Echeveria runyonii × Echeveria xichuensis, created in Germany by Joachim Pressfreund. It forms compact rosettes, generally solitary or with the ability to produce offsets. Its leaves are longer and thicker than those of E. xichuensis, gray to bluish-gray in color and covered in farina. The intensity of the coloration can vary notably depending on the lighting, temperature, and water status of the plant.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a horticultural cultivar of the Crassulaceae family, so it does not have its own natural distribution area. Its parents are Mexican: Echeveria runyonii is native to Tamaulipas and E. xichuensis from Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí. Both species live in dry environments or xerophilic scrubland.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC in dry, well-acclimatized specimens and during brief exposures. As with many Echeverias, cold accompanied by moisture is much more dangerous than dry cold, so during winter episodes the substrate must be kept completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It needs a lot of light to maintain a compact rosette and develop the grayish and pink tones that characterize the cultivar. Very bright exposure is recommended, even direct sun with gradual acclimatization. Insufficient lighting favors the elongation of the internodes and makes the rosette lose its compact shape.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Growth mainly in spring and autumn, with slowing down during thermal extremes. During the periods of active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, if temperatures are low, the water supply should be greatly reduced. During periods of intense heat, it is also advisable to space out waterings and ensure excellent ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces tall inflorescences with flowers in orange and yellow tones, inherited from the Echeveria genus. Flowering usually appears during the periods of active growth and develops above the rosette.
🌿 Nutrition
During the period of active growth, a fertilizer specific for succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, applied once a month when watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technical square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
