Echeveria colorata ‘Mexican Giant’ | The Silver and Crimson Giant
€37,10
🌱 Morphology
A large horticultural selection, generally forming a solitary rosette and growing slowly, which can reach around 30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are broad, fleshy, oval to obovate, and end in a distinct point. The surface is covered with abundant whitish farina, creating a silvery or glaucous blue effect, while the margins and apex develop deep pink, carmine red, or burgundy tones. With age, it may develop a short stem, but it usually retains a very well-defined architectural rosette.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A selected cultivar of Echeveria colorata, a botanical species described by Eric Walther in 1972 and native to Jalisco, in western Mexico. The species grows in dry environments and xerophytic scrub. ‘Mexican Giant’ was horticulturally described by Max Holmes in Australia in the late 1990s and is considered closely related to Echeveria colorata f. brandtii. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae, tribe Sedeae, series Urbiniae. It should not be confused with Echeveria agavoides, to which this commercial name is sometimes incorrectly attributed.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b: −3.9 °C. This value indicates the lower limit of the climate zone, not a guaranteed minimum temperature for the cultivar. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frost and avoid combining cold with wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with gradual acclimation, and a reference DLI PAR of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant light encourages a compact rosette and contrast between the silvery farina and carmine margins. In very hot summers, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense midday sun to prevent scorching.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, deep watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry before watering again. Reduce watering in winter, especially at low temperatures. Drainage must be excellent, and water should not be allowed to collect in the center of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
It produces branched inflorescences that can reach about 30 cm in height, with bell-shaped flowers that are reddish or orange at the base and yellow to light orange toward the tip. Flowering may begin in spring. There is not enough consistent data to specify the age at first flowering, self-fertility, or whether multiple flowering flushes occur in a single season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Bloom. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
