Echeveria chihuahuaensis Poelln.
🌱 Morphology
Forms dense, compact, and generally solitary rosettes measuring about 10–15 cm in diameter. The leaves are numerous, fleshy, obovate-spatulate, and end in a sharp point with a small mucron. Their color ranges from bluish-gray to glaucous green, with the margins and apex tinged red or pink. The whitish farina softens the contrast and provides a silvery finish. Some clones produce offsets easily, while others remain solitary rosettes for longer.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Botanical species described in 1935, native to northern Mexico, with documented presence in Chihuahua, Sonora, and Durango. The type locality is in the Colorado River valley in Chihuahua, on stony soils, at an altitude of about 2,300 m. It grows in dry, rocky environments. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family, Sedeae tribe, Urbiniae series.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b: −3.9 °C. This is the lower limit of the climate zone, not a guarantee of the plant's hardiness. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and avoid the combination of low temperatures and wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with gradual acclimatization, and a reference PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant lighting promotes compact rosettes and reddish margins. In very hot summers, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun during the middle hours, maintaining adequate ventilation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry before the next watering. In winter, water input is reduced, especially if temperatures are low. Drainage must be excellent, and it is advisable to prevent water from accumulating in the center of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
Produces flower stalks up to about 20–25 cm, branched and with yellow flowers, often with pink or reddish tones on the outside. Flowering usually appears from spring to summer, depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
