Echeveria caamanoi — The Fire Rosette of Puebla
🌱 Morphology
An Echeveria that forms rosettes of fleshy, relatively narrow and flattened leaves with pointed tips. The foliage has a bluish-green or glaucous base, while the margins and tips can acquire pink, orange, or reddish tones when exposed to abundant light and cool nights. The color contrast gives this echeveria an elegant and defined appearance. The intensity of the colors varies depending on the season, lighting, and growing conditions. The name is still considered provisional in some specialized references, so the identification should be treated with caution.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The name Echeveria caamanoi is used for a plant commercially associated with Mexico and previously known in some collector circles as Echeveria sp. ‘Nova Puebla’. However, the documentation consulted does not allow for the certain establishment of a precise wild locality or a sufficiently detailed description of its natural habitat. The International Crassulaceae Network includes it as a provisional name (nom. prov.), so the name used in horticulture should not be confused with a fully established formal botanical description.
Family: Crassulaceae. Subfamily: Sempervivoideae. Tribe: Sedeae. Subtribe: Sedinae. Genus: Echeveria.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is a frost-sensitive plant that is especially vulnerable when cold temperatures coincide with moisture in the substrate. It is recommended to grow it preferably between 10 and 28 °C and protect it from temperatures close to 0 °C. In winter, it should be kept in a very bright, well-ventilated, and sheltered location. It is not advisable to assign it high cold resistance until sufficiently reliable specific data for this provisional taxon become available.
☀️ Lighting
It needs a lot of light to maintain the compact shape of the rosette and promote the reddish coloration of the edges. Very bright exposure and gentle sun, introduced gradually to prevent burns are recommended. As a cultivation reference, a PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ can promote good coloration in acclimated plants. During the Madrid summer, it should be protected from the most intense midday sun and provided with adequate ventilation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Its growth is considered most favorable during spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate. It is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the very hot summer and cold winter, watering should be reduced if the plant slows down its activity. Excess moisture around the roots can cause rot, so an airy, fast-draining substrate is required.
🌸 Flowering
Like other species in the genus, it can produce flower stalks with bell-shaped flowers in pink or orange tones and yellow hues inside.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied in moderation and to the previously moistened substrate. Balanced nutrition helps maintain firm leaves and compact growth. Excess nitrogen should be avoided, as it can promote soft tissues and reduce the plant's resistance. Fertilization should be reduced or suspended during periods of slowed growth.
Gourmet black 9x9 cm pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with a substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
