🌱 Morphology
Spectacular Echeveria hybrid that forms symmetrical rosettes approximately 15 cm in diameter. Its leaves are fleshy, wide at the base and progressively narrower towards the apex, with a defined tip. Its most striking feature is its contrasting coloration: the foliage combines olive green and orange tones with dark burgundy, purple, or almost black margins and tips. The intensity of these pigments varies with lighting and temperature, acquiring greater color depth in bright conditions and with cool nights. With age, it may produce basal offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae · Subfamily Sempervivoideae · Tribe Sedeae. ‘Black Tiger’ is a horticultural designation, not a wild species. No sufficiently reliable documentation has been found to confirm its breeder, genealogy, or country of origin. Although its appearance is reminiscent of some selections of Echeveria agavoides, it should not be attributed to that species without evidence to confirm it.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. It is recommended to preferably keep it above 5 ºC and avoid frost. The theoretical limit of the USDA zone is −1.1 ºC, but it does not guarantee that this cultivar will withstand that temperature. In Madrid, it is advisable to protect it from cold, damp conditions and persistent rain during the winter.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Approximate PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and develop the dark tones of its margins. It must be gradually acclimated to direct sunlight and protected from the most intense radiation during Madrid heatwaves. With insufficient lighting, it loses contrast and may grow loosely.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding any retention in the center of the rosette. During episodes of extreme heat, its activity may slow down, so it is advisable to space out waterings. In winter, waterings should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate almost dry when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It produces tall flower stalks with bell-shaped flowers in reddish to orange tones, clustered along the inflorescences. Flowering usually occurs during spring or summer, although it may vary with growing conditions. There is no sufficiently reliable data to establish the age of first flowering or confirm several flowering flushes in the same season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
