🌱 Morphology
From Asia... A rhizomatous succulent plant with a rosette growth habit. It produces erect, rigid, and fleshy lanceolate leaves, grayish-green in color with dark green transverse bands and a characteristic longitudinal groove on the adaxial surface. The margins may feature a thin whitish to reddish line. The leaves reach approximately 30–60 cm in length and form dense clusters arising from the rhizome.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is native to southern India and Sri Lanka, where it grows in seasonally dry tropical environments. It is a rhizomatous geophyte adapted to periods of lower water availability.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC in dry conditions, although it should be protected from frost and, above all, from the combination of cold and moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It thrives with intense lighting, approximately 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It tolerates lower light intensity conditions, although good lighting promotes more compact growth and better expression of the leaf bands.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During the warm season, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, irrigation should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate virtually dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It may produce an elevated inflorescence from the rhizome, with small, tubular, and generally whitish or greenish flowers. Flowering is occasional in cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing season, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. It is not recommended to fertilize during winter dormancy.
