🌱 Morphology
Fan out!... A succulent, rhizomatous, and acaulescent plant with a very compact habit, forming small rosettes whose leaves are arranged radially in a fan shape. It is a dwarf horticultural selection of Dracaena angolensis, notably more compact than the wild species.
The leaves are cylindrical, fleshy, rigid, and relatively short, grayish-green to silvery-green in color, with darker transverse bands. They are initially arranged in flat or slightly arched fans and can reach approximately 15–30 cm in length, although larger cultivated specimens exist. The plant produces new shoots from the rhizome, progressively forming clusters of fans.
Its compact and geometric appearance is one of the most distinctive characteristics of this cultivar.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Boncel’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin of Dracaena angolensis, so it does not have a natural distribution of its own.
The species of origin is native to Angola, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, where it grows in seasonally dry tropical environments. It is a rhizomatous geophyte adapted to prolonged periods of drought. The old name Sansevieria cylindrica continues to be widely used in horticulture, but the currently correct name is Dracaena angolensis.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC occasionally when it remains completely dry and protected from humidity. For safe cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 8–10 ºC.
Cold combined with a damp substrate can cause damage to the roots and rhizome. During the winter, watering should be significantly reduced, and any accumulation of water at the base of the leaves should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It tolerates conditions ranging from bright partial shade to very high light. Good light intensity encourages compact growth and maintains the grayish-green coloration of the leaves. It can be grown with several hours of mild direct sun, always through progressive acclimatization.
In conditions of insufficient light, growth may be reduced and the leaves may adopt a less compact arrangement.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases significantly with low temperatures.
During the active growth period, it is recommended to provide abundant watering and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. The fleshy leaves and rhizome allow it to withstand prolonged periods of drought, so it tolerates a lack of water much better than an excess of moisture.
In autumn, watering should be progressively spaced out, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding it being retained between the leaves or around the neck of the plant.
🌸 Flowering
In adult specimens, flowering is occasional in cultivation. It produces an inflorescence that emerges from the base of the plant and can exceed the height of the rosette.
The flowers are small, whitish or pinkish in tone, with a delicate appearance and star shape, and may release a noticeable fragrance. Flowering is much less frequent in young plants than in mature, well-established specimens.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
