🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing, compact succulent hybrid selected for its small size and geometric architecture. It develops erect stems densely covered with fleshy, triangular and flattened leaves, arranged in four tightly packed rows that form square-section columns. The leaves overlap like small tiles, creating a structure reminiscent of a miniature pagoda. Its usual color is green, although it can develop reddish, bronze, or purplish tones when exposed to plenty of light and cool temperatures. Over time, the stems may branch and become partially woody at the base, forming small clusters. The ‘Minor’ form stands out for its compact stature, making it especially well suited to architectural succulent collections.
🌍 Origin, lineage, and family
Family Crassulaceae, genus Crassula. Horticultural hybrid of Crassula pyramidalis × Crassula congesta, marketed under the name Crassula pyramidalis × congesta minor. Its parent species are native to southern Africa and share compact growth and the characteristic arrangement of leaves on columnar stems. As a cultivated hybrid, it has no natural distribution of its own. The commercial name ‘Minor’ refers to its small size.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures close to −1 °C for short periods, provided the substrate remains dry. Protect it from prolonged frost and avoid cold conditions accompanied by moisture around the roots. In winter, place it in a bright, sheltered spot.
☀️ Lighting
Plenty of light–gentle sun. Abundant light encourages compact growth and the development of well-defined columns. A PAR DLI of 15–25 mol/m²/day is recommended, with gradual acclimation to direct sun. The combination of intense light and cool temperatures can enhance reddish and purplish tones. In very hot summers, protect it from the strongest sun during the middle of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Growth depends mainly on temperature, light, and water availability, so it is best not to impose a rigid dormancy period. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During extreme heat or low temperatures, water less frequently, making sure the roots do not remain wet for extended periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces terminal inflorescences with numerous small flowers, generally white to creamy white, appearing above the columnar stems. Flowering may occur in autumn or spring, depending on growing conditions. As with other columnar crassulas, terminal flowering may affect the stem that flowers; however, this hybrid’s response may vary, and it should not be assumed that the entire plant will die after flowering.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, with particular attention to potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, following the stated dosage and allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. Reduce or stop fertilizing when growth slows.
