🌱 Morphology
Perennial herbaceous succulent, low-growing and capable of forming dense colonies via stolons that root upon contact with the substrate. The rosettes can be numerous and form clusters 30–50 cm in diameter. The leaves are arranged in a spiral; they are oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, occasionally obovate, approximately 1.5–8 cm long, fleshy and flattened, with an acute apex. They are green, although they can acquire pinkish or reddish hues on the margins and toward the apex when receiving more light. They feature a characteristic row of marginal cilia. Older leaves often remain attached to the stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
A species endemic to South Africa, distributed from the southwest and south of the Cape Province to KwaZulu-Natal, at altitudes of approximately 50 to 1800 m. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It grows mainly in sheltered places, on rock outcrops, walls, and protected slopes, frequently associated with scrublands, forests, and other environments with some protection from direct solar radiation. Its distribution ranges from relatively dry environments to Afromontane forests.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b–11b
It is a more tolerant species than its appearance might suggest, and in its natural range, it withstands both cold spells and high temperatures. However, in cultivation, it must be protected from severe frost and, especially, from the combination of extreme heat, intense radiation, and lack of ventilation. In winter, it is recommended to keep the substrate dry when temperatures are low.
☀️ Lighting
A semi-shade species. We recommend lighting of 10–18 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, as a guideline. It tolerates high lighting if acclimated gradually, but its ecology in sheltered and partially shaded places means it is not necessary to grow it in intense full sun. Filtered or semi-shaded lighting can be especially suitable during the summer in Madrid.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Opportunistic. It exhibits a relatively flexible cycle due to its wide distribution and the diversity of environments it occupies. It remains active in moderate temperatures and can grow for much of the year when conditions are favorable. In summer, intense heat can slow down growth, especially under direct sun. During growth periods, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In episodes of extreme heat or during the cold winter, watering should be spaced out considerably.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is terminal, elongated, with a well-differentiated peduncle of approximately 5–20 cm and numerous branches. The flowers have a tubular corolla ranging from white to pale yellow, which may be tinged with pink or reddish-brown; the anthers are yellow. In Spain, it flowers approximately between December and May, depending on temperatures and cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended. Before and during flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering, especially when the plant is in active growth and has good lighting.
