🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent, small and highly branched, with a fleshy base that can acquire a somewhat woody consistency with age. The stems are short and compact, and the plant reaches approximately 10 cm in height during flowering. The leaves are sessile, fleshy, and densely imbricated, approximately 0.5–1.5 cm long and 0.4–1 cm wide, ovate to lanceolate, obtuse to acute, flat or slightly convex on the upper surface and markedly convex on the underside. They do not form four perfectly regular rows. Depending on the clone, they can be glabrous or covered in fine recurved hairs. The coloration ranges from green to brown, passing through reddish and intense purple tones when it receives plenty of light and experiences cool temperatures.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Crassula elegans belongs to the Crassulaceae family and the Arta section of the genus Crassula. The species is distributed from northern Vanrhynsdorp to southwestern Namibia, mainly west of the mountains located between Namaqualand and Bushmanland. It grows on sandy or gravelly slopes and quartzite outcrops, in both exposed positions and protected locations. ‘Eenriet’ identifies a specific provenance from Eenriet, in the Northern Cape, within the Namaqualand region. It is not considered an independent botanical variety.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b–11b
It is a species from arid and semi-arid areas of northwestern South Africa, where it can experience cold nights and even occasional frosts. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and to keep the substrate dry when temperatures are low. Cold accompanied by humidity significantly increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
High lighting is recommended, approximately 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR as a target guideline. It tolerates direct sun if acclimated, although during episodes of extreme heat it may be advisable to filter the most intense radiation and ensure excellent ventilation. High lighting also promotes the compaction and the reddish and purple tones characteristic of plants subjected to higher radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. It is a Crassula adapted to a territory with predominantly winter rains, so its greatest activity occurs during seasons with moderate temperatures, especially in autumn and spring. The hot, dry summer causes a slowdown in growth. During active periods, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In summer, watering should be spaced out considerably, especially during heat waves. In winter, if temperatures are low, it is recommended to keep it practically dry and progressively resume watering when vegetative activity increases.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a terminal inflorescence in the form of a thyrse, with extended branches and small groups of sessile flowers. The petals are oblong-elliptic, approximately 2–2.5 mm, cream or white in color, acquiring brown tones as they age; the anthers are brown. In Spain, flowering can occur approximately between July and October, depending on temperatures and the cultivation cycle.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering to favor the development of the inflorescences.
