🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing, compact, and highly branched horticultural hybrid that branches with age. It develops erect stems, initially short and green, which can reach approximately 15–30 cm and branch from the base. The leaves are small, fleshy, narrowly lanceolate, pointed, and slightly curved upwards. They are arranged in an extraordinarily dense manner around the stems following a helical pattern, forming short columns that resemble a small corkscrew. As the plant develops, compact clusters of numerous stems are formed. The coloration is normally bright green and can acquire reddish tones with intense lighting and cool temperatures.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Crassulaceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid, so it does not have its own natural distribution. It is attributed to Miss Gaudon, in Antibes, France, and the epithet ‘Estagnol’ refers to the Chemin de l'Estagnol. Its complete parentage is not documented with sufficient certainty; different sources relate it to Crassula pyramidalis, but there is no solid evidence to establish a complete formula. It is also marketed under the name ‘Spiralis’ and other spellings derived from ‘Estagnol’.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. As it is a hybrid of horticultural origin, the USDA zone should be considered as a guideline. It tolerates moderate temperature drops when kept completely dry, but it is recommended to protect it from frost and especially from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. High lighting is essential to maintain short internodes and the characteristic compact arrangement of the leaves. It can receive direct sun after progressive acclimation, avoiding sudden changes in exposure during extreme heat episodes.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Being a hybrid, it does not have a natural climatic cycle of its own. Its growth is favored by moderate temperatures and good lighting, while it may slow down during periods of intense heat. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During periods of extreme heat, watering should be spaced out, and during cold weather, it should be kept practically dry. The extremely compact arrangement of the leaves makes it especially important to avoid persistent moisture around the stems.
🌸 Flowering
Inflorescences appear at the ends of the stems, forming small, compact, and almost sessile structures. The flowers are small, star-shaped, and white to pinkish-white. In Madrid, flowering can be expected approximately between February and May, depending on temperatures and the duration of lighting.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and always respecting the complete drying of the substrate. Before flowering, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
