Crassula corallina subsp. corallina | Coral Crassula
ā¬10,60
š± Morphology
Small perennial succulent, with a primarily prostrate and very low growth habit, forming small clumps via stems up to about 8 cm in length. The stems are fleshy and can produce adventitious roots at various nodes, a feature especially useful for differentiating it from subsp. macrorrhiza. The leaves are opposite, sessile, and very close together, approximately 3ā5 Ć 2ā3 mm, obovate to almost elliptical, angular, convex, and with a verruculose surface. Their color varies from grayish-green to brownish-gray and can be partially hidden by a whitish waxy layer, which is responsible for its characteristic silvery or frosted appearance.
š Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is widely distributed throughout South AfricaāFree State, Northern Cape, Western Cape, and Eastern Capeāand reaches southwestern Namibia. It inhabits areas from approximately 200 to 1700 m, on sandy soils, gravels, and stony terrain, frequently with superficial limestone or over granite and dolerite. It appears in Nama Karoo, Succulent Karoo, and dry grassland environments, generally in full sun and with high drainage.
āļø Temperature ā USDA Zone 9bā11b
It tolerates low temperatures when kept completely dry and well-acclimated. The actual resistance depends on the duration of exposure, substrate moisture, and acclimatization. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and, especially, to avoid the substrate remaining damp during cold spells.
āļø Lighting
Indicative target of 15ā25 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ of PAR DLI during the growth period. Intense lighting promotes a compact structure and enhances the grayish tones and pruinose appearance. Gradual acclimatization to direct sun is recommended.
š§ Growth cycle and irrigation
Its wide distribution includes environments with different rainfall regimes, so it is not appropriate to impose a rigid dormancy calendar. Growth is favored by moderate temperatures and water availability, always alternating abundant irrigation with complete drying of the substrate. During periods of extreme heat, it may slow down and watering should be spaced out; with low temperatures, it is recommended to keep it practically dry. The ability to produce adventitious roots on the stems allows for rapid recovery after dry periods.
šø Flowering
Flowers appear in small terminal inflorescences. The corolla is cream-colored, urceolate in appearance, with yellow anthers. In Spain, flowering occurs approximately around JuneāOctober, depending on temperature, lighting, and cultivation regime.
šæ Nutrition
During the active period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously hydrated. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICEĀ® Flowering to promote floral development.
