🌱 Morphology
A Cotyledon that breaks with the species' usual appearance: instead of forming a rigid clump, it develops spreading, ascending branches that end up leaning on surrounding vegetation as if searching for space to climb. It can reach up to 1.5 m in height. Its leaves, grouped at the ends of the branches, are fleshy, compressed, grayish-green, and have a fine powdery layer that helps protect them from water loss. They are obovate to linear-obovate, 7–9.5 cm long, with a mucronate apex and, occasionally, a reddish margin.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is a species endemic to a small area of the South African Western Cape: it is only known from the surroundings of the Goukou River and its tributaries, in the Still Bay region. It lives in Southern Cape valley thickets, among Ecca shale rocks, where it adopts a semi-scandent growth habit and leans on surrounding vegetation. The climate is mild, with about 300–400 mm of annual precipitation that can occur at any time.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1.1 ºC, although it comes from a region where frosts are exceptional and very light. In cultivation, it is advisable to protect it from persistent frosts, especially when the substrate is damp.
☀️ Lighting
It develops particularly well with 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during active growth. It tolerates full sun as well as bright semi-shade; in Madrid, a very bright exposure favors more compact growth and better expression of the leaves' grayish hue. For specimens accustomed to less light, adaptation to direct sun should be done progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It does not have a rigidly defined dormancy period: in its natural area, rainfall can occur throughout the year and the climate is relatively mild. During growth periods, abundant watering is recommended, letting the substrate dry out completely before watering again. During periods of intense heat or when temperatures drop, watering should be spaced out, always adjusting to the plant's actual state and the drying speed of the substrate.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs in late spring and early summer, mainly between May and June in Madrid. The inflorescences, ascending and branched, can reach 20–55 cm and rise above the vegetation. The flowers are pendulous, tubular, intense yellow in color, about 2.5 cm long, with recurved lobes. They are visited and pollinated by nectarivorous birds, especially sunbirds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering.
