🌱 Morphology
Small, usually solitary cactus, with a globose to slightly depressed body, grayish-green to dark green, about 2–6 cm tall and 5–9 cm in diameter. The tubercles are low, very close together and imbricated, arranged in about 13 rows and provided with a longitudinal groove. The areoles develop 11–16 white to yellowish radial spines, rigid and flattened against the body, whose ends intertwine with those of neighboring areoles. It may have a single central spine, although it is often absent; when it appears, it is hooked and curved downward, resembling a cat's claw. This arrangement of the spines gives the plant its extraordinarily compact appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to northern Mexico, mainly Chihuahua and Durango, also present towards Sonora. It inhabits altitudes between approximately 1400 and 2400 m in desert scrub, grasslands, sandy plains, volcanic soils, and pine-oak forest areas. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe. Nomenclature follows Joël Lodé, Taxonomy of the Cactaceae (2026), volumes III–VI.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must be kept completely dry, especially during prolonged cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun to maintain its compact shape and develop dense spination. As a guide during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Growth is concentrated during spring and summer. It is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. From autumn onwards, watering is gradually reduced until it is kept dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear at the apex and are pale yellow, approximately 2–3 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs mainly between late spring and summer. The fruits are ovoid and acquire orange to brownish-orange tones when ripe.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
