🌱 Morphology
Globose and depressed cactus, normally solitary, up to about 13 cm in diameter. It features large, flattened, conical tubercles, bright green to bluish-green, arranged in a spiral. Each tubercle has a longitudinal groove on top covered with white wool. The areoles usually bear 5–8 robust, rigid, and extended radial spines, generally recurved, without central spines. In cultivation, it can produce numerous basal offsets and form small compact groups. And that is what distinguishes it from Coryphantha elephantipens, which offsets more reluctantly.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to southwestern Mexico, especially Morelos and Guerrero, where it grows in xerophytic vegetation environments and seasonally dry areas. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe, Coryphantha genus. The nomenclature used in this fact sheet follows Joël Lodé, Taxonomy of the Cactaceae (2026), volumes III–VI. The name Coryphantha elephantidens subsp. bumamma is a taxonomic combination formerly used by other databases.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC in dry and acclimated specimens. Resistance decreases significantly when the substrate remains moist during cold periods.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting, preferably direct sun, although it may benefit from slight protection from the most extreme sun during the middle of the day in very hot climates. As a guideline during active growth, a PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Growth is concentrated during the warm months. It is recommended to water deeply during the active period and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. From autumn onwards, watering is gradually reduced until it is kept dry during the winter. It is especially important to avoid excess moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large, bright yellow and pleasantly scented flowers, which appear in the apical area during late summer and autumn. In adult specimens, they can open successively for several weeks. Another difference with Coryphanta elephantipens , which has pink flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
