🌱 Morphology
Jade plant. Perennial shrubby succulent, with an erect to decumbent habit, which can reach about 1 m. The stems branch out and become lignified with age. The leaves are opposite and decussate, very fleshy, and extraordinarily variable according to the geographical form: they can be obovate, orbicular, oblanceolate, or even oblong-cylindrical, generally glabrous, although pubescent forms exist. They can reach about 10.5 × 5 cm, with a green, glaucous, or grayish surface and, frequently, reddish and wavy margins. The apex has a small mucro.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Its natural distribution extends from southwestern Angola and Namibia to the Cape provinces in South Africa. It inhabits dry and rocky environments in fynbos, Succulent Karoo, grasslands, and scrublands, usually on rocky outcrops.

It is a species adapted to dry climates with significant temperature fluctuations. It can tolerate moderate drops in temperature if kept completely dry, but it is recommended to protect it from persistent frosts and, especially, from the combination of cold and moisture in the roots.
☀️ Lighting
Very high lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Intense lighting promotes compact growth and can intensify the reddish tones of the margins. Exposure to direct sun should be done progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. During cold periods, the frequency should be reduced considerably, keeping the substrate dry for prolonged intervals. Rapid drainage is essential to avoid root problems.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescences can reach about 45 cm and produce tubular and hanging flowers, up to about 20 mm, generally yellow, orange, or red, with recurved petals. In its natural area, it flowers mainly during spring and summer; in cultivation in Spain, the period may vary depending on temperature and photoperiod.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, avoiding an excess of nitrogen that could produce tissues that are too soft. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
