🌱 Morphology
Small cespitose succulent that forms low, relatively loose clusters. Each body is formed by a pair of fused leaves, with a rounded to elliptical outline and a truncated or slightly convex apex. It features a smooth epidermis, grey-green to blue-green, generally speckled with small, darker spots. The bodies can reach about 2 cm in height and diameter. The subspecies includes variable forms; the kosiesense variety, for example, is distinguished by being densely covered in tiny trichomes.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, mainly from Little Namaqualand and the southern Richtersveld, in the Northern Cape province. It lives on quartz and granite outcrops, in rocky terrain where it remains partially integrated among the stones. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10b–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to 1 ºC. The published hardiness for this subspecies is limited; cultivation sources advise avoiding frost and maintaining excellent ventilation, especially during dormancy.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it needs plenty of light, with a target above 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun in cool seasons, but during the summer, it is preferable to protect it from afternoon sun and excessive temperatures.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a winter-growing succulent: it begins to activate at the end of summer and develops its new bodies during autumn and winter. During growth, perform abundant waterings, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next one. In spring, it progressively reduces its activity, and during the summer, it remains practically dry, providing water only very occasionally if the bodies become excessively dehydrated.
🌸 Flowering
Yellow, diurnal flowers, approximately 15 mm in the specifically described variety; they appear at the beginning of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. In Madrid, this corresponds approximately to March-April.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
