🌱 Morphology
Taxonomic change... Generally a solitary, occasionally cespitose cactus, with a depressed globose body, grayish-green, about 4–5 cm tall and 7–11 cm in diameter. It presents 13–20 ribs arranged in a spiral and deeply divided into large, rounded tubercles, which produce a very characteristic relief. The areoles are grayish or whitish and slightly woolly when young. It develops 7–11 radial spines, grayish, fine and spreading, and 1–4 central ones, generally brownish, gray or nearly black, one of which is directed downward and slightly hooked, up to about 2.5 cm long.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Bolivia, mainly in the departments of Chuquisaca and Potosí. It lives at altitudes between approximately 2,600 and 3,200 m, in dry grasslands and rocky slopes of the Andes, in places completely exposed to the sun. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC when dry and well-acclimated. During winter, it must be especially protected from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and direct sun once acclimated. As a general guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should be kept dry and well-ventilated.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small bell-shaped flowers, approximately 1.8–2.7 cm long, that appear grouped around the apex. Their color varies from yellowish-orange to reddish-orange, with an intense warm hue that contrasts with the grayish-green body.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
