🌱 Morphology
Taxonomic change... Small cactus, usually solitary although it can form groups, with a globose to short-cylindrical body, green to greyish-green, approximately 4–16.5 cm tall and 6–12.7 cm in diameter. It has 13–15 low ribs, very markedly spiraled, which take on an almost helical appearance. The areoles are provided with flexible and conical spines, white or greyish-white, often with orange tones at the tips. The 4 central spines can be arranged in a cross and the lower one reaches up to about 2.3 cm. The radials are usually 5–11. The apex is covered by a characteristic whitish wool.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to Bolivia, mainly in the department of Potosí and nearby areas of Chuquisaca. It inhabits rocky outcrops of the Andean Puna, approximately between 3,100 and 4,000 m altitude, in open and highly exposed environments, with a large daily thermal range. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Its high-altitude origin allows it to withstand significant temperature drops, but resistance to dry cold should not be confused with tolerance to winter humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense lighting and can receive direct sun after progressive acclimation. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water thoroughly when the substrate is completely dry, subsequently favoring rapid drying. In winter, it must be kept dry and with good ventilation, especially due to its natural adaptation to high-altitude environments and high thermal range.
🌸 Flowering
It produces yellow-orange flowers, bell-shaped and relatively small, which appear in the upper part of the body. The warm coloration of the flowers contrasts with the white and orange spination.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be complemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
