🌱 Morphology
Taxonomic change... Generally solitary cactus, with a depressed globose to short-cylindrical body, light green to slightly bluish, which can reach approximately 12–24 cm in height and 10–17 cm in diameter. The apex, which is depressed, is densely covered with whitish wool. The ribs are deeply transformed into a spiral succession of small tubercles. The areoles produce numerous fine, straight, needle-like spines, between 25 and 40 per areole, ranging in color from yellowish-white to golden. The central spines, which are more robust and erect, can reach about 2 cm and display golden-yellow tones with a reddish-brown base.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northwestern Argentina, mainly in the Jujuy province, where it grows at altitudes between approximately 1,500 and 2,500 m in arid inter-Andean valleys and rocky terrain, occasionally among deciduous forest vegetation. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when dry and well-acclimated. Its mountain origin allows for significant thermal drops, but it must be kept completely dry during winter.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun, with progressive adaptation. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should be kept practically dry and with good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers emerge around the apical crown and are golden yellow, funnel-shaped, and about 2.5 cm in diameter. Their size is relatively small compared to the body, but the intense yellow of the flowers harmonizes with the golden spination that characterizes the species.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
