🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus, with a body that is initially globose but transforms into a columnar shape with age, potentially reaching over 1 m in height in adult specimens. It generally presents 8 straight or spiraled, tall, sharp, and marked ribs. The epidermis can be light green, dark green, or grayish, and is covered with small white or yellowish trichomes that group together to form bands or spots. The areoles are large, woolly when young and later more naked, and develop robust spines, generally yellowish or brownish, which turn gray with age.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Mexico, with a distribution mainly in Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato, and San Luis Potosí. It inhabits arid and semi-arid zones, especially in canyons, rocky slopes, and limestone cliffs, where it can grow among xerophilous scrub and take advantage of crevices and rocks that provide some protection against radiation. It develops on shallow, stony, and well-drained soils. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8b–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC if it remains completely dry and is properly acclimatized. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dormant and with the substrate dry.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting during active growth and several hours of direct sun. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR allows for compact growth and favors good formation of trichomes and spines.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly from spring to early autumn. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it enters dormancy and should be kept practically dry. Rapid drainage is especially important to avoid root problems.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large, solitary, diurnal flowers, bright yellow in color, which appear in the apical area and can reach about 7–12 cm in diameter. Flowering can occur during various periods of the year; in Madrid, it is expected mainly between May and July, although additional flowers may appear at the end of summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
