🌱 Morphology
A succulent tree with a thick trunk that can reach 3–9 m in height, exceptionally more. The trunk and branches are smooth, grayish, and covered by bark that peels off in large, golden-brown scales with very sharp edges. The branches repeatedly divide in two, forming a rounded crown. At the ends appear rosettes of 10–20 blue-green, narrow, lanceolate leaves, about 20–35 cm long, slightly channeled and with small marginal teeth. Young specimens have leaves arranged in vertical rows before developing adult rosettes.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Asphodelaceae. It is distributed from western and central Namibia to northern South Africa, especially in Namaqualand and Bushmanland, extending eastward to Upington and Kenhardt. It grows on rocky slopes and very arid terrain, in Succulent Karoo, Namaqualand, and various karroid vegetation types. It does not commonly grow in deep alluvial soils. It is a species of great landscape importance in the southern African desert.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. Established specimens can withstand occasional drops below 0 °C if completely dry, but in pots, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially with high ambient humidity or wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It needs full sun and very high light. During growth, aim for 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Good exposure is essential to achieve compact growth and a balanced crown. Young specimens should be progressively acclimated to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle
Summer dormancy / autumn-spring growth, related to the predominantly winter rainfall regime in much of its natural area. During the active period: Water generously and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, with Madrid's high temperatures, significantly reduce watering and avoid keeping the substrate wet.
🌸 Flowering
Inflorescences appear between the rosettes, in short, branched panicles, with erect clusters of bright yellow tubular flowers, about 3 cm long, whose orange stamens protrude from the corolla. In South Africa, it flowers mainly in June-July, during the austral winter; in Madrid, it can be expected approximately between December and February, although the flowering of cultivated specimens may vary with conditions. The flowers produce abundant nectar and are visited by numerous birds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., with calcium and potassium supplementation. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
