🌱 Morphology
Aloe, generally stemless, solitary or forming small groups via offsets. It develops compact rosettes of about 10–20 erect or spreading leaves, which can reach about 30 cm in length. The leaves are lanceolate, green to brownish-green, with numerous elongated white spots arranged in irregular transverse bands; dry tips may twist characteristically. The margins have firm, brownish, triangular teeth about 3–5 mm long. The very striking inflorescence reaches 1–1.3 m and usually branches above or around the middle.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
A species of the Asphodelaceae family, endemic to South Africa, with a restricted distribution to southeastern Limpopo and nearby areas of northwestern Mpumalanga, especially between Burgersfort, Steelpoort, and Lydenburg. It primarily grows in bushveld, on sandy soils, both in open spaces and under shrubs and trees, at an altitude of about 1,000–1,400 m. Although its distribution area is small, it is locally abundant and is classified as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–10b. It is relatively cold-hardy within the genus and can withstand occasional drops near -4 °C in well-established, dry specimens.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Tolerates full sun and bright partial shade. Intense lighting promotes rosette compaction and can intensify the brownish tones of the leaves. In Madrid, it should be progressively acclimated to direct sun after winter.
💧 Growth cycle
Mainly summer growth, with winter dormancy. It comes from a region with predominantly summer rainfall and winter flowering. During the active season: water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. From late autumn and during winter, significantly reduce watering, keeping the substrate dry between applications.
🌸 Flowering
It flowers mainly in winter, approximately from December to February. It produces a branched inflorescence with cylindrical racemes of dull red or coral red flowers, with striking green and white stripes on the upper part and, occasionally, orange tones towards the mouth. The flowers are pendulous, and the floral bracts are relatively long, one of the characteristics that help differentiate it from Aloe parvibracteata.
