Agave stricta Salm-Dyck ‘Nana’
🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing agave that forms very compact, regular, and almost spherical rosettes. The leaves are numerous, narrow, rigid, and fleshy, glaucous green to grayish-green in color, with a semicircular cross-section and a strong reddish terminal spine. ‘Nana’ maintains a size much smaller than the typical form, generally around 20–30 cm in diameter and height. Over time, it may produce offsets and form small colonies.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Belongs to the Asparagaceae family, Agavoideae subfamily. Agave stricta is native to southern Mexico, especially Puebla and Oaxaca, where it grows in dry areas, rocky slopes, and open environments. ‘Nana’ is a horticultural selection of reduced size and does not have a natural distribution of its own.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC in dry conditions and with well-established specimens, although it is recommended to protect it from winter humidity and prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
It is a full sun plant. Intense lighting, with approximately 18–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, promotes compact rosettes and can intensify the glaucous and reddish tones of the leaves. It tolerates partial shade, but loses some of its compact habit.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It grows mainly during warm periods. It is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, watering is greatly reduced, and it is kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
After reaching maturity, it can produce a long flower stalk, much taller than the rosette, with numerous flowers. Unlike many other agaves, Agave stricta is polycarpic: the rosette does not necessarily die after flowering and can continue to grow or produce new shoots.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
