🌱 Morphology
Small-sized agave, highly variable depending on growing conditions, forming a relatively open rosette of up to 30–40 cm in diameter in more compact forms. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and glaucous green to bluish-gray in color, generally narrower towards the base and tending to curve or arch. The margins feature strong, brown or grayish teeth, set on small tubercles, and end in a robust apical spine. In cultivation, it stands out for its sculptural appearance and for maintaining much smaller proportions than the typical forms of Agave seemanniana.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a form originally described in Chiapas, Mexico, where it is known from a very specific locality situated north of the border with Guatemala, near Comitán, at around 1,000 m of altitude. It grows in dry environments on white limestone walls and outcrops, a highly draining habitat that helps explain its compact habit. Currently, Agave pygmaea is considered a synonym of Agave seemanniana.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae · Genus Agave · Species Agave seemanniana Jacobi.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. As it comes from a warm and dry environment, it is recommended to protect it especially from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and several hours of direct sun, which favor the compaction of the rosette and the intensity of the glaucous coloration. During very hot summers, it may appreciate light protection during the central hours of the day. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Mainly spring-summer growth. During the active period, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In autumn, waterings are progressively reduced, and during winter, it is kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
Like other agaves, it is monocarpic: once it reaches maturity, it produces a large inflorescence and the rosette dies after flowering, although it may leave offsets. The inflorescence of A. seemanniana can reach several meters and produces yellowish flowers. No sufficiently reliable data on the age of the first flowering specifically for A. pygmaea has been found.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its supply of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
