🌱 Morphology
Solitary, occasionally cespitose cactus with a globose body that can elongate with age, approximately 8–10 cm in diameter and up to 15–20 cm in height. The epidermis is greyish-green, frequently glaucous, and develops about 14 broad, rounded ribs. The areoles produce particularly characteristic spines: long, strong, rigid, and curved, intertwining around the body. They are generally brown, with a darker tip, and can reach about 5 cm. The taproot is napiform, adapted to dry periods.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It originates from Cerro Zorrito, in the province of Salta, Argentina, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 2200 to 2700 m in dry mountain environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. The substrate must be kept completely dry during periods of intense cold.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and direct sun to develop compact, well-colored spination. A DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended during active growth, with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During winter, it is kept dry. In spring and summer, abundant, spaced-out watering is resumed, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. The napiform root makes it especially important to avoid prolonged waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
The most spectacular feature of this form is its flowers, about 5 cm in diameter, generally dark orange, although yellow or reddish flowering specimens may also appear. They open laterally in the apical zone and create an intense contrast with the grey-green epidermis and the dark spines.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
