🌱 Morphology
Generally solitary cactus, with a depressed-globose stem, although it can acquire a more globose shape, glaucous green to grayish green in color. It can reach about 10 cm in height and up to 20 cm in diameter. It has about 21 well-differentiated ribs, formed by conical tubercles. The areoles are small and have no glands. It normally develops 3–4 straight, subulate, silvery and frayed central spines, which can reach approximately 6–8 cm in length. This combination of conical tubercles and long, silvery central spines helps differentiate the nidulans form within the Thelocactus rinconensis complex.
🌍 Habitat and geographical distribution
It is mainly associated with the Mexican state of Coahuila, especially in the vicinity of Saltillo and Parras, within the Chihuahuan desert. It grows between approximately 1300 and 2100 m of altitude, in xerophilous scrub on limestone soils.
❄️ USDA Zone and minimum growing temperatures
USDA Zone 8b–11. Zone 8b corresponds to average annual lows of approximately −9.4 to −6.7 °C. Being from interior and relatively elevated areas of the Chihuahuan Desert, this plant is naturally exposed to significant thermal contrasts. Cold should always be evaluated together with humidity: a completely dry plant during dormancy has a much higher cold resistance than a hydrated plant.
☀️ Lighting
It needs intense light to maintain compact growth and promote the development of its characteristic silvery spines. Full sun is recommended during the growing period, with progressive adaptation when coming from conditions of lower light intensity. As a cultivation reference, a target of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR can be used during the active phase.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During winter, it should be kept completely dry. With the arrival of spring, active growth begins and watering can be resumed. During this phase, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Watering should be gradually reduced as autumn approaches until it enters dormancy again.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers of Thelocactus rinconensis are large in relation to the plant body, white to pale pink and, occasionally, with a pink stripe on the petals. The species flowers mainly in spring, with flowering records from March to May.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growing period, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended, with assimilable calcium and magnesium. The contribution should be concentrated in spring and summer, coinciding with active growth.
