Gymnocalycium 'Spineless' f. cristata | Jade Waves
€42,40
🌱 Morphology
An extraordinary horticultural form of spineless Gymnocalycium, combining two uncommon characteristics: the inermis condition, with absent or extremely reduced spines, and cristation, an alteration of meristematic growth where the stem ceases to grow from a single point and expands laterally, forming a crest. The result is an undulating, folded, and deeply sculptural structure resembling a living fan. The smooth, shiny green epidermis is fully exposed, allowing the folds, grooves, and tubercles to be appreciated. Each specimen develops a unique architecture and may become progressively wider and more complex with age.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
The parent species of this commercial selection is not known with certainty. The name ‘Spineless’ is used for various spineless Gymnocalycium, and some plants are specifically marketed as G. mihanovichii ‘Inermis’ f. cristata. Therefore, when there is no clonal traceability, it is more rigorous to maintain the horticultural name without attributing a definitive specific identification.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. As the genetic origin of this selection is not known with certainty, cautious frost protection is recommended.
☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade is recommended, with PAR radiation exceeding 20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Exposure should be increased gradually. Specimens kept in low light may lose the compactness of the crest, while excessive sun exposure can cause burns on the exposed epidermis.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, waterings are progressively reduced, and it is kept dry during the winter. The crested structure requires special attention to drainage, as its numerous folds can retain moisture.
🌸 Flowering
It can produce white, pink, or pinkish-violet flowers, generally in spring and early summer. The flowers emerge from different points along the crest and stand out particularly well against the spineless epidermis. Cristation does not guarantee a specific flowering, and a sufficiently reliable age for the first bloom has not been established for this specific selection.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
