🌱 Morphology
Dwarf succulent, with a creeping habit, forming mats. The stems are short and partially hidden by the sheaths of old leaves. The leaves appear in decussate pairs; they are erect, soft, fleshy, and nearly cylindrical, reaching about 6 cm in length. With abundant sunlight, they can acquire dark green, reddish, or purple tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to South Africa, in the interior of the Western Cape, especially between Prince Albert and the Little Karoo up to Willowmore. It inhabits weathered shaly sandstone and soils derived from these rocks, in arid environments. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when kept dry. Resistance decreases considerably when the substrate remains moist during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and develops a more compact form and more intense coloration with high sun exposure. During active growth, it is recommended to exceed 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR, avoiding keeping the plant in permanent shade.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Main growth occurs from late winter to spring, slowing down with summer heat. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In summer, water supply should be significantly reduced, especially at high temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Produces yellow flowers, large and very showy in relation to the plant's size. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is recorded mainly in March-April, which is approximately equivalent to September-October in Spain.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen supply.
