🌱 Morphology
A miniature perennial succulent, virtually stemless, forming small clusters of erect, cylindrical, fleshy, grayish-green leaves. The tip of each leaf features a characteristic translucent window, which allows light to enter the interior. It possesses a short, thick subterranean organ. During droughts, it loses water, retracts, and can become practically buried under the gravel.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, restricted to Gauteng and North West, in the Magaliesberg mountain range. It grows on rock plates and very shallow soils derived from coarse quartzites, among quartz gravel. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting, with a target of over 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during growth. It tolerates direct sun, although in summer it may appreciate some protection during the hours of maximum insolation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It is a summer-growing succulent adapted to summer rains. During the active period, it allows for abundant watering provided that the substrate drains quickly and dries out between waterings. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, as the cold season in its natural habitat is dry.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers of intense magenta, with a white or pale yellow center, about 2.5–3.5 cm in diameter. It blooms mainly in spring and early austral summer, approximately from September to December in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during waterings and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
7 × 7 cm gourmet black pot.
