🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing, generally solitary agave that forms a spectacular, compact rosette approximately 50–90 cm tall and 60–120 cm in diameter. The leaves are thick, rigid, and lanceolate, bluish-green, greenish-gray, or grayish-blue in color, and can reach about 40–70 cm in length. The margins feature robust, usually brownish or grayish, widely spaced teeth, and each leaf terminates in a strong, dark terminal spine several centimeters long. The combination of broad, glaucous, and arched leaves creates a highly architectural rosette.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is native to southwestern Texas and northern Mexico, mainly Chihuahua and Coahuila. It grows at altitudes between approximately 1,100 and 1,800 m in stony and frequently calcareous terrain, within desert scrub, grasslands, and open oak and pine forests. It is a species adapted to large thermal fluctuations, drought, and winter cold.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 5b
It tolerates minimum temperatures as low as −26 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. There are reports of specimens that have survived temperatures even close to −29 ºC, always under conditions of dry cold. Cold accompanied by moisture is considerably more dangerous for the roots.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun, although it tolerates light partial shade. Intense exposure promotes the compact development of the rosette and maintains the characteristic grayish-blue hue of the leaves. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Growth mainly in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. It is a very drought-resistant species, so it is better to underwater than to maintain permanent moisture. In autumn, waterings are progressively reduced, and it can be kept practically dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the rosette blooms only once upon reaching maturity and then dies, although it may occasionally produce offsets that perpetuate the plant. The inflorescence is a large, erect stalk of approximately 2–5 m, crowned by numerous yellow, yellow-greenish, or whitish flowers, which are often aromatic. Flowering occurs mainly in summer. It is considered a very slow-maturing species: approximately 10–20 years to maturity have been documented, although under unfavorable natural or cultivation conditions, it may require 20–40 years.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Suculentas is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
