🌱 Morphology
An acaulescent succulent, with compact growth that can produce offsets from the base and form small clumps. It develops rosettes approximately 20–30 cm in diameter and height. Its leaves are fleshy, rigid, and triangular, initially arranged distichously and later forming a rosette. They have a dark green surface with numerous tubercles or small whitish protuberances, which give it its characteristic rough texture and mottled appearance. The apex is acute and the margins may have small teeth.
It is a hybrid that combines the habit and texture of Gasteria with characteristics of Gonialoe variegata.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
× Gasteraloe is a horticultural hybrid between Aloe and Gasteria, so 'Aveo' does not have its own natural distribution. It is attributed to the combination of Gonialoe variegata and Gasteria carinata var. verrucosa (also cited as Gasteria verrucosa in horticultural sources). Both parents come from Southern Africa. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature and USDA zones
USDA Zone 10a–11. In cultivation, it can tolerate temperatures close to −1 ºC, provided the substrate remains dry and exposure to cold is not prolonged. For Madrid, it is preferable to protect it from frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Light
Prefers partial sun or bright semi-shade, although it can receive a few hours of direct sun if acclimated gradually. For compact growth and to maintain the contrast between the green of the leaves and its white tubercles, I would avoid both deep shade and intense sun during the central hours of summer.
As a guiding target for active cultivation: PAR DLI ≈ 12–18 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
It exhibits mainly active growth during temperate seasons, with a tendency to slow down during very hot and dry summers and also with low temperatures in winter. In Spain, it can be grown with watering from spring until early autumn, always adapting it to the temperature and the drying speed of the substrate.
Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During periods of extreme heat or cold, significantly reduce water intake. The base of the leaves should be kept especially free of accumulated water, as excess humidity promotes rot.
🌸 Flowering
Produces raceme inflorescences with pendulous tubular flowers, generally in pink or orange tones, with light areas and greenish stripes. Under cultivation conditions in Spain, it can flower mainly between February and March, although the date may vary depending on temperature and light.
During the preparation and development of flowering, Desert CHOICE® Floración can be used, in addition to regular fertilization, to promote good flower formation.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. NPK 3-2-8 (Ca-Mg) (8-1), especially suitable for this Asphodelaceae hybrid. In mature plants, when the flowering season approaches, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
