🌱 Morphology
Small cactus with a globose, depressed-globose, or occasionally somewhat elongated body, up to 6 cm tall and 4.5 cm in diameter, which eventually produces numerous offsets and forms large, compact clusters or true pads. The tubercles are conical to cylindrical, dark green in color, with naked or slightly woolly axils. It is covered by an extraordinary amount of fine spines, generally 35–60 or more radial spines, which are white, rigid, and hair-like, measuring about 6–9 mm. The central spination is highly variable: the typical form may lack clearly differentiated centrals, while other populations present up to about 12 white, yellowish, or brown-tipped central spines. This variability reflects the former recognition of distinct subspecies, now integrated into M. laui.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Tamaulipas, Mexico, between Ciudad Victoria and Jaumave, where it occupies mountain slopes and canyons between approximately 800 and 1,700 m. Higher-altitude populations are associated with dark metamorphic rocks and north-facing slopes, while others grow among pines and oaks in the more humid parts of the canyons. The species is considered Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae · Genus Mammillaria · Species Mammillaria laui D.R.Hunt.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC when dry and for brief periods. Lower values have been reported, but −5 ºC is a safer cultivation reference, especially when grown in pots.
☀️ Lighting
It appreciates very abundant light, ranging from direct sun to bright partial shade during the hours of peak summer intensity. High lighting levels promote the formation of its characteristic white, compact spination, although gradual acclimation to direct sun is recommended. For reference, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the winter, keep it completely dry with good ventilation. In spring and summer, it is recommended to water deeply, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. It is especially sensitive to excess prolonged moisture, so waterlogging must be avoided.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is concentrated in spring, with intense carmine pink flowers, approximately 1.2–1.5 cm in diameter and up to 1.5–2 cm in length, which contrast spectacularly with the white spination. Populations corresponding to the former subsp. dasyacantha can produce a second and even a third wave of flowers throughout the year, so this form may behave as re-flowering under favorable conditions. No sufficiently reliable data regarding the age of the first flowering for this species has been located. The fruits are whitish or pale pink and contain black seeds.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
