🌱 Morphology
A compact Japanese selection, also known as ‘Kuro Daruma’ for its rounded habit and its extraordinarily short, thick, and tightly packed leaves. Its most striking feature is the contrast between the very dark epidermis and the large, shiny leaf windows, marked by black lines that accentuate their pattern. The combination of plump leaves, an almost spherical appearance, and a dark hue makes it a highly prized selection among collectors. Cactus Nishi suggests the cross Haworthia picta × H. springbokvlakensis as a possible origin, although it does not confirm it. As with many Haworthias, the old roots can deteriorate during the summer dormancy and renew when growth resumes in autumn.

🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
A collector’s horticultural cultivar associated with Japanese selections. Its exact genealogy has not been independently confirmed. The genus Haworthia originates from southern Africa, where many species grow in rock crevices and under protective vegetation.

Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.

❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is advisable to keep it above -1 °C and protect it from frost, especially when the substrate is moist. During intense heat, it needs ventilation and protection from direct sunlight.

☀️ Lighting
Abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. Proper lighting helps maintain its compact habit and the dark contrast of the epidermis; intense sun can cause burns. Approximate PAR DLI: 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the cooler seasons, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out before watering again. During periods of intense heat, reduce watering and promote ventilation. Gradually resume watering in autumn, when temperatures drop and root growth reactivates. Avoid waterlogging.

🌸 Flowering
It produces an elongated inflorescence with small whitish tubular flowers, which are inconspicuous compared to the ornamental appeal of its leaves.

🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., NPK 3-2-8 with calcium and magnesium, is recommended. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
