Faucaria tuberculosa 'Super Warty' | Super warty Faucaria
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
A monstrous, small-sized, cespitose, low-growing cultivar. It forms compact rosettes of opposite, thick, triangular-ovate, dark green leaves. What distinguishes it from the typical form are the huge tubercles or warts on the leaf surface, which are much more developed, swollen, and twisted, giving it an almost sculptural appearance. The margins retain the characteristic soft, whitish teeth of Faucaria tuberculosa. Some specimens also exhibit floral-like contorted petals.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It does not exist in the wild: it is a cultivar of horticultural origin, supposedly Japanese, selected from Faucaria tuberculosa. The parent species is South African and belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–12. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC if the substrate is kept dry. The RHS classifies F. tuberculosa as H2 and recommends protecting it from frost; resistance depends especially on the plant remaining dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and direct sun to maintain its compactness and properly develop its characteristic warts. Growth goal: DLI PAR >20 mol/m²/day. The flowers need direct sun to open completely.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In winter and during dormancy, water should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate practically dry to prevent rot.
🌸 Flowering
Yellow, daisy-like flowers, up to about 4 cm in diameter, which open only with sufficient sunlight. In the ‘Super Warty’ cultivar, the petals may also display a characteristic contorted deformation. Flowering usually begins in late summer and autumn; in Madrid, approximately September-November.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen intake.
