🌱 Morphology
A very slow-growing dwarf Japanese cultivar that forms an extraordinarily compact rosette, resembling a rosebud, about 10–15 cm tall and 15–30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are short, thick, broad, and deeply concave, bluish-green or grayish-green in color, with a characteristic creamy-white central band that can take on yellowish hues. The margins feature small, spaced, brown teeth, while the apex ends in a small spine. It can produce basal offsets and form small colonies over time.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a cultivar of Japanese horticultural origin, so it has no natural distribution of its own. Its botanical classification is subject to some discrepancy: it is commonly sold as Agave potatorum, while numerous specialized sources relate it to Agave isthmensis, a species described from the A. potatorum complex. A. potatorum is native to central Mexico, from southern Puebla to western central Veracruz and central Oaxaca, where it grows in seasonally dry environments, approximately between 1,240 and 2,300 m.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. In this variegated and very slow-growing form, it is more prudent to protect it from frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity. Sources specific to the cultivar offer values between approximately −3 and −5 ºC.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and well-defined variegation. Mild direct sun or bright partial shade is recommended, avoiding scorching sun during midday hours when temperatures are very high, as the light areas contain less chlorophyll and can burn. As a reference, a PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Growth primarily in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced, and it is kept almost dry during winter. Its extremely slow growth makes it advisable to avoid both excess water and oversized pots.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the rosette flowers only once after reaching maturity and then dies, although it may leave offsets that continue the clone. Flowering is exceptional in cultivation; if it does occur, it can develop a panicle of approximately 2–3 m, with yellowish flowers. No sufficiently documented age of first flowering has been found for this specific cultivar.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of assimilable potassium and calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
