đ± Morphology
Succulent intergeneric hybrid with a rosette growth habit, obtained from a cross between Manfreda and Agave. âSnow Leopardâ is a variegated sport of Mangave âJaguarâ, from which it retains the architectural long, lanceolate leaves, but develops a characteristic creamy-white marginal variegation.
It forms an open, symmetrical rosette that can reach approximately 40â45 cm in height and 56â61 cm in diameter. The leaves are fleshy, elongated, and lanceolate, arching progressively outward. The green surface is covered with numerous dark spots, while the margins feature a wide creamy-white stripe. In the marginal areas, the spots can take on pink to cherry-red tones, especially under intense lighting.
The intensity of the pigmentation increases with exposure to ultraviolet radiation, so specimens grown in high light may show a particularly marked contrast between the green color, the dark spots, the pink tones, and the light margins.
đ Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae. ĂMangave is a hybrid intergeneric nothogenus between Manfreda and Agave. It does not correspond to a natural species and, therefore, âSnow Leopardâ does not have its own geographical distribution or wild habitat.
The two parental genera are native to the Americas and have adaptations to dry and sunny environments. The hybrids combine the architecture and resistance of Agave with the faster growth and characteristic pigmentation provided by Manfreda.
âSnow Leopardâ comes specifically from a variegated sport mutation of âJaguarâ, selected for its white margins and the contrast of its spots.
âïž Temperature
USDA Zone 9â11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to â7 ÂșC occasionally when perfectly dry and protected from humidity. The specific resistance can vary among Mangaves according to the genetic combination of their parents; the Mad About Mangave collection itself notes an approximate range of â7 to â1 ÂșC for most cultivars, with some hybrids capable of withstanding lower temperatures.
In cultivation, it is advisable to avoid low temperatures coinciding with a damp substrate. During winter, it is recommended to keep it much drier.
âïž Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 20â30 mol·mâ»ÂČ·dayâ»Âč.
It needs very high light levels and can be grown in full sun after gradual acclimatization. Intense radiation promotes rosette compaction and increases the contrast of the spots, which can take on pinker tones at the margins. Ultraviolet light especially intensifies the expression of the spots.
For specimens recently moved from protected conditions, exposure should be increased gradually to avoid leaf burn.
đ§ Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It is a succulent mainly active during the warm times of the year. In summer, when temperatures are suitable, it maintains growth and appreciates regular waterings, provided the substrate has excellent drainage.
During the active period, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Although it tolerates drought, growth is faster and more vigorous with adequate watering during the active phase.
In autumn, watering should be gradually spaced out, and during winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially in low temperatures. Excess humidity during the cold period can promote root and crown rot.
đž Flowering
As with Agave and Manfreda, it can produce a long terminal flower stalk when it reaches maturity. Flowering consumes a considerable amount of reserves and, depending on the hybrid's genetics, can temporarily modify the structure of the rosette.
In cultivation, flowering depends on the specimen's age, size, temperature, and lighting conditions and is not a main ornamental feature of âSnow Leopardâ, whose interest lies primarily in its white variegation and spotting pattern.
đż Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICEÂź Succulents is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bio-assimilable calcium, applied after watering.Â
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
