🌱 Morphology
×Mangave with a compact habit and sculptural appearance, characterized by its extraordinarily thick, lanceolate, and wavy leaves. They form a rosette wider than it is tall, with folded, concave blades and margins curving upward, allowing its small marginal teeth to be seen. The base color is silvery bluish-green, with subtle purple-gray spotting that intensifies with ultraviolet radiation. The marginal and terminal spines are relatively soft and flexible. It reaches approximately 20–25 cm in height and 45–50 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It has no natural distribution: it is an intergeneric horticultural hybrid of the Asphodelaceae family, obtained by Hans A. Hansen at Walters Gardens. It is a second-generation ×Mangave with a higher proportion of Agave characteristics. Its parentage has been described as being derived from Agave pablocarrilloi × Agave colorata × Manfreda maculosa.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a–11
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −7 ºC, corresponding to the lower limit of USDA 9a, provided the substrate is dry and conditions are well-ventilated. When grown in pots, it is advisable to protect it from prolonged frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity. Walters Gardens recommends keeping ×Mangaves dry during the winter.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun, with more than 6 hours of direct solar radiation. A DLI PAR of 18–30 mol/m²/day is recommended during active growth. UV radiation promotes the expression of the purple-gray spotting, while insufficient light may make both the contrast of the spots and the silvery-blue hue less intense.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it maintains active growth and appreciates regular watering, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Drainage must be excellent and waterlogging should be avoided. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced, and it is kept dry or slightly dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
Like other ×Mangaves, it can produce a tall floral stalk when it reaches maturity. The plant that flowers eventually dies after blooming, but it usually develops basal offsets that allow the cultivar to be perpetuated. In trials at the Chicago Botanic Garden, ‘Catch a Wave’ flowered after one to two years, although precocity depends on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Suculentas is recommended, with high potassium and bio-assimilable calcium content. It is applied with irrigation, avoiding fertilization during winter dormancy.
