🌱 Morphology
Small slow-growing hybrid succulent with branched fleshy stems forming compact clusters of rosettes. The leaves are thick, obovate and slightly concave, with a gently pointed apex. They are arranged very closely together and may curve upwards, resembling small spoons. Its most distinctive feature is its chocolate-brown colour, which can take on bronze, reddish or dark purple hues under bright light. Unlike many Graptopetalum, its foliage has a more satiny than powdery appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae · Notogénero ×Lenopetalum. It is a horticultural hybrid between plants of the genera Lenophyllum and Graptopetalum, not a wild species. Its exact origin and parents are unknown. The International Crassulaceae Network warns that a plant marketed in Australia as Lenophyllum ‘Chocolate’shows hybrid characteristics, especially in its rosettes and inflorescences.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. It is recommended to keep it above 5 ºC and to avoid frost. The zone reference is indicative and does not guarantee cold tolerance. In Madrid it should be grown protected during the winter, especially from moisture and low night temperatures.
☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade. Indicative PAR DLI: 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It needs plenty of light to retain its dark colour and compact growth. It can receive gentle morning sun, but it is advisable to protect it from the intense Madrid summer sun to avoid burning.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. During active growth, it is recommended to water moderately and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. Its roots are sensitive to waterlogging. In winter, watering should be reduced, keeping the substrate almost dry when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It produces tall inflorescences with five-petalled star-shaped flowers in yellow or greenish-yellow tones, characteristic of hybrids in this group. There is no reliable data on the age at first flowering or its ability to re-flower several times in a season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilising is not recommended during the winter dormancy period.
