🌱 Morphology
A compact, branching succulent hybrid, with stems that can reach about 15 cm in height and spread out or trail over the edge of the pot. The leaves are fleshy, obovate to lanceolate, flat on the upper surface and slightly keeled underneath. They are arranged in a spiral around the stems, forming small rosettes at the tips. Its main attraction is its bronze, coppery, and reddish coloring, which intensifies with bright light and cool temperatures. In lower-light conditions, it may develop greenish or grayish tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Subfamily Sempervivoideae · Tribe Sedeae · Notogenus ×Graptosedum. It is a horticultural hybrid of unknown origin, probably attributed to a cross between Graptopetalum paraguayense × Sedum stahlii. It was named by Marjorie Shields in New Zealand and published in 1978. It has also been marketed as ‘Vera Higgins’, ‘Coffee’, and ‘Alpenglow’, although there has been historical confusion over names and clones; ‘Bronze’ is the preferred designation for Desert CITY.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b. As a conservative guideline, avoid temperatures below −3.9 ºC, the theoretical limit for this zone, which does not guarantee the hybrid’s actual hardiness. It tolerates brief cold spells better when the substrate is dry; prolonged frosts and winter moisture increase the risk of damage. In Madrid, protect it from persistent rain and the coldest nights.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Bright light encourages compact growth and coppery and reddish tones. Gradually acclimate it to direct sunlight, especially before the Madrid summer. In low light, the stems become elongated and the foliage loses its color intensity.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. It is drought-tolerant but not tolerant of waterlogging. In winter, space out watering according to the temperature and the plant’s activity, ensuring the roots do not remain wet during cold spells.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flower stalks with small, star-shaped yellow flowers, generally in spring or early summer. The flowers contrast with the warm tones of the foliage.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
