🌱 Morphology
Small succulent hybrid, stemless growth with a tendency to form offsets, forming small clumps.
The adult plant develops a rosette approximately 7.5 cm in diameter and about 4 cm high, consisting of around 12 leaves. These reach approximately 4.5 cm in length by 1.5 cm in width.
The leaves are fleshy, relatively short and wide, matte green, covered with numerous white or pink spots or blotches. The surface has a distinctly warty texture, a characteristic inherited from its parents, and the margins are finely denticulated.
Its parentage is perfectly documented: ×Gasterhaworthia ‘Granlill’ Cumming × Gasteria batesianaG.D.Rowley. The hybrid was obtained by D. M. Cumming, and is also characterized by being a prolific growing cultivar and easy to propagate both by offsets and leaves.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is not a wild species, but an intergeneric horticultural hybrid of the family Asphodelaceae.
The name ×Gasterhaworthia designates hybrids obtained between Gasteria and Haworthia. In 'Fandango', the hybrid ×Gasterhaworthia 'Granlill' and Gasteria batesiana are involved in a more complex way, so it should not be described simply as a direct cross between a Gasteria and a Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone — USDA 10a–11
Due to its nature as a Gasteria × Haworthia hybrid and its small size, it is considered a plant for protected cultivation against frost.
As a cultivation reference, it can be approximately placed in USDA 10a–11. In Madrid, it is advisable to keep it protected from temperatures close to 0 °C, especially when the substrate is wet.
☀️ Lighting — Indicative DLI PAR: 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹
Plenty of light with partial shade or filtered light is recommended, avoiding sudden exposure to intense sun during the central hours of summer.
An indicative target of 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR helps maintain a compact rosette and promotes the expression of contrast between the matte green of the leaves and the white spots. Excessively low light can lead to more open growth and reduce the intensity of coloration and mottling.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It mainly grows during the temperate seasons of the year, slowing down when temperatures are extreme.
Watering should be abundant, allowing water to fully pass through the substrate, and then it should be allowed to dry out completely before watering again.
During the summer, if temperatures are very high, there may be a temporary slowdown in growth. In this case, watering intervals should be extended. During winter, with less light and low temperatures, the intervals should be even longer.
🌸 Flowering
As with other Gasteria hybrids, the inflorescences are tall and bear pendulous tubular flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with NPK 3-2-8 (Ca-Mg 8-1) formulation and micronutrients, is recommended.
Root application is done once a month during its active stage. During the formation of flower buds, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering, always adjusting fertilization to the plant's activity.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
