🌱 Morphology
A stemless, slow-growing, compact succulent that develops an upright rosette and may produce basal offsets over time. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and triangular, approximately 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, with an elongated, acute apex and finely toothed margins. The surface is dark green and densely covered with small, light green tubercles, giving it a very characteristic granular texture. The patent for 'D Tiga' specifically highlights its upright rosette, dark green leaves, and numerous light tubercles.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It does not have its own natural distribution. It is a hybrid Gasteria cultivar belonging to the family Asphodelaceae. A particularly interesting fact is that 'D Tiga' originated from a spontaneous mutation of a hybrid Gasteria named 'WT10', discovered in May 2013 in a greenhouse in Amposta, Catalonia, and subsequently propagated vegetatively.
❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone
USDA 10a–12. The patent indicates observed tolerance approximately between 5 and 40 °C. For cultivation in Madrid, it is recommended to protect it from frost and especially to prevent the roots from remaining wet at low temperatures.
☀️ Lighting
It thrives best with abundant, filtered light or bright semi-shade, avoiding intense direct sunlight, especially during the central hours of summer. Too much exposure can cause burns and changes in leaf coloration. For cultivation purposes, it can be managed at approximately 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, which is sufficient to maintain a compact rosette without subjecting the leaves to excessive radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
It is an opportunistic plant, without a rigid seasonal dormancy. It can remain active for much of the year when it has mild temperatures and good lighting, although growth slows down with winter cold and during periods of extreme heat. During the active period, generous watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn and winter, the frequency should be considerably reduced, and with low temperatures, water applications should be spaced even further apart. Excess humidity is one of the main risks for these plants.
🌸 Flowering
Gasteria produce long inflorescences with tubular and pendulous flowers, usually in shades of pink, orange, or reddish. In 'D Tiga', flowering can occur during spring and summer.
🌿 Nutrition
Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended. It is specifically formulated for this group of plants, with NPK 3-2-8 + (Ca-Mg) (8-1).
During the floral preparation and development phase, it is recommended to supplement with Desert CHOICE® Flowering, avoiding an excess of nitrogen that only promotes vegetative growth.
