🌱 Morphology
Xerophytic hybrid of Gasteria carinata × Gonialoe variegata, commercially known as × Gasteraloe 'Carivarie'. The combination of both parents produces a particularly striking plant.
It features fleshy, long, narrow, and lanceolate leaves, arranged very characteristically in two levels or rows (distichous arrangement). The leaves are dark green and show numerous whitish spots and small longitudinal bands. One of its most distinctive features is the wide cream or ivory margins, which can acquire pink or salmon tones, especially on the edges and tips exposed to intense light. The margins have fine denticulation, and the apex is very acute. The leaves progressively arch outwards, giving the plant a much more elongated and stratified silhouette than other compact rosette ×Gasteraloe.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is not a wild species, but a horticultural hybrid. Its parents come from the arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa and belong to the family Asphodelaceae. Gasteria carinata is a South African species, while Gonialoe variegata —formerly known as Aloe variegata— is a small succulent from arid regions of Southern Africa. Botanical literature currently recognizes Gonialoe as an independent genus within Alooideae.

A minimum temperature of −1 °C is established. In Madrid, it is advisable to protect it from frost, prolonged cold, and especially the combination of low temperatures and moist substrate.

Its optimal condition is in bright semi-shade or filtered light. The indicative target during growth can be around 10–16 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR DLI. Intense lighting promotes compaction and the expression of cream and pink tones on the margins, but abrupt exposure to strong midday sun during summer should be avoided, especially in young specimens. The combination of abundant light and ventilation is preferable to excessively deep shade.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
It exhibits a growth pattern primarily during temperate seasons, with the possibility of relative dormancy during periods of intense heat.
Summer dormancy. In cultivation, generous watering should be performed from September to June, and then the substrate should be allowed to dry completely before re-watering.
🌸 Flowering
The indicated flowering for 'Carivarie' is between February and April.
It develops lateral inflorescences with pendulous tubular flowers, typical of the Gasteria–Gonialoe hybrid complex. No sufficiently reliable source has been found to attribute a specific color to the flowers of this cultivar, so it is not specified to avoid introducing unverified data.
