x Bicarinated Astroliste | The Karoo's double keel
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
A highly variable natural hybrid, with rosettes that can develop short, robust stems. Its fleshy, spirally arranged leaves range from relatively erect to more open or recurved forms. The surface is usually covered with numerous small tubercles, often arranged longitudinally, and may feature one or more keels. The combination of leaf texture, keels, and a robust growth habit brings together characteristics of both parents. Some specimens resemble Astroloba corrugata more, while others approach the appearance of Tulista pumila. This natural variability makes it difficult to establish a single silhouette for the hybrid.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
A natural intergeneric hybrid from the western Little Karoo in the Western Cape province of South Africa, where the distribution areas of its parents overlap. The accepted hybrid formula is Astroloba corrugata × Tulista pumila. Within its natural range, it is associated with open ground of slate or clay origin.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Notogenus × Astrolista.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
As a conservative cultivation guideline, it should be kept above -1°C and protected from frost, especially when the substrate is wet. It requires good ventilation and effective drainage to better tolerate cold periods.
☀️ Lighting
Ample light is recommended, with gentle sun or bright partial shade. Acclimatization should be gradual if sun exposure is increased. As an initial guideline, a PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ can be used, adjusted to the plant's response and avoiding overheating in summer.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the warmer seasons, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out before watering again. In intense heat, waterings should be spaced out and good ventilation maintained. Persistent moisture around the roots should be avoided, especially during cold periods or dormancy. Watering should be gradually resumed in autumn as temperatures moderate.
🌸 Flowering
It produces an elongated, generally branched inflorescence with tubular flowers in light, whitish, or yellowish tones. The floral morphology bears similarities with Tulista pumila. The flowering period may vary with the climate and growing conditions; in the Northern Hemisphere, it does not necessarily coincide with the calendar observed in South Africa.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied moderately and according to the product instructions. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
