🌱 Morphology
Small, globose to slightly depressed cactus, grayish-green in color, which may acquire purplish tones with cold or solar stress. It forms numerous offsets from the base and can develop compact colonies. It features flattened tubercles arranged in a spiral and narrow areoles, from which numerous fine, flexible, and interlaced spines emerge, generally white, cream, or yellowish, which can acquire darker tones. It has a powerful napiform root that is sensitive to excess moisture. It is a highly variable species, especially in the coloration and arrangement of the spines and flowers.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Bolivia, especially around Tarabuco, in the department of Chuquisaca, where it grows in stony mountainous areas at altitudes of approximately 3,090 to 3,770 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae. In Joël Lodé's taxonomy, it is maintained as Weingartia tarabucoensis; the old names Sulcorebutia tarabucoensis and other combinations reflect the complex taxonomic history of this group.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. In winter, it must be kept completely dry, especially due to the sensitivity of its root system to excess moisture.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, gradually increasing exposure to avoid sunburn.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. It should pass the winter with practically no water. In spring, with rising temperatures and the resumption of growth, it is recommended to water abundantly but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. A highly draining substrate is especially important to avoid damage to the napiform root.
🌸 Flowering
In spring, it produces flowers that are large for the size of the body, approximately 3.5–5 cm, which appear from the base. They can be cherry red, dark magenta, reddish, yellow, or present combinations of these colors.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
