🌱 Morphology: A compact Kelly Griffin hybrid with moderate growth, forming small rosettes of triangular, fleshy, green to blue-green leaves covered in whitish spots and bumps. The margins have large, blunt, curved teeth, initially orange, which can turn reddish. With ample light, the leaves develop brown, purple, and even almost black hues. It produces numerous offsets and forms small clumps over time.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family: This is a horticultural hybrid created by Kelly Griffin during his time at Rancho Soledad Nurseries, California, so it has no natural distribution or habitat of its own. Its parentage is not reliably published. It has also been marketed under the name 'Marco', although there are historical discrepancies regarding the names used for different in vitro cultivation batches. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 9a–11b. Specialized sources place its hardiness around −1 °C, but for safe cultivation in Spain, it is recommended to keep it above 5 °C, especially in pots. It can withstand brief drops close to 0 °C if kept completely dry and protected.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR DLI during growth. It tolerates direct sun after gradual acclimatization, although it can also be grown in bright semi-shade. High light is essential to achieve its dark tones and maintain the contrast between the spots and teeth.
💧 Growth cycle: Opportunistic, with growth primarily during temperate periods. During the active period, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, reduce watering and keep the substrate drier; during periods of extreme heat, it is also advisable to space out watering.
🌸 Flowering: Produces small coral red to orange-red flowers, grouped in short, dense inflorescences. Under favorable growing conditions, it can flower mainly during autumn and winter, although summer blooms have also been observed depending on conditions.
🌿 Nutrition: During active growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., specifically formulated for these plants with an especially important contribution of calcium and potassium. Reduce or suspend fertilization during periods of slowed growth.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
