Tulista pumila var. ohkuwae (M.Hayashi) Breuer
🌱 Morphology
One of the most spectacular forms of Tulista pumila: a small botanical sculpture formed by thick, rigid, triangular leaves, but here covered by a true constellation of large white tubercles. In ‘Ohkuwae’ the tubercles are especially dense, large, and prominent, and also appear on the upper surface of the leaves, a trait that distinguishes it from many populations of the species. A compact, virtually stemless rosette, very slow-growing and generally solitary or with few offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to the Western Cape, South Africa, especially from Keurfontein, Vrede, and Esselsfontein, in the area of the Worcester-Robertson Karoo and transition zones towards the Little Karoo. These are locations with very open and relatively dry vegetation. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, subfamily Asphodeloideae. The currently accepted name is Tulista pumila var. ohkuwae; Haworthia ohkuwae is its basionym.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. In cultivation, it is more important to avoid the combination of cold, persistent humidity, and wet substrate than a brief drop in temperature.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade. It requires high light levels to develop compact and well-defined tubercles. A very bright location is recommended, with protection from scorching sun during the central hours of summer. DLI PAR: 12–20 mol/m²/day during active growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It comes from a region with mainly autumn and winter rains, so it concentrates its activity with moderate temperatures and the arrival of rains from autumn to spring. In summer, when the climate is warmer and drier, it significantly reduces its activity. It is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering, spacing them out significantly during the summer.
🌸 Flowering
Produces a tall, thin inflorescence, approximately 40 cm, with small, waxy, tubular flowers in shades of white-pink to greenish or brownish. The flowering of T. pumila generally occurs between late spring and early summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
